What Is in This Advertisement?

A wide landscape spread printed in orange, black and white, with the centre fold and two punch holes visible down the middle. The headline runs across both pages in a heavy serif. The left page carries a paragraph addressed to OUTDOORSMEN, then three sections titled ROADSTER, SPORTS UTILITY and WAGON, each with a white Bronco drawn in profile on a solid orange panel: the open roadster with no roof and cut-down doors, the half-cab with a short steel roof, and the full-length wagon with side windows. What Was Ford Selling Here?

A new class of vehicle, described in its own copy as offering 32.1 cubic feet of load space, a 56-inch full-width tailgate, a removable 70-pound roof on the Sports Utility, an 8,000-pound winch and a 78-inch snowplough. The first-generation Bronco ran from 1966 to 1977 in exactly the three body styles set out on this spread (Fesler), and its project name G.O.A.T. stood for Goes Over Any Terrain (Classic Industries). The roadster body shown at the top of the left page is the rarest of the three today (Hyman Ltd).

Why Does the Brochure Use Drawings Rather Than Photographs?

Because a drawing can be made identical. Three profile illustrations at the same angle, same scale and same colour let a buyer compare roofs and doors with nothing else changing, which a photograph on location cannot do. The photographs are then held back for the two things a drawing cannot prove: that the load bed is really that size, and that the tailgate really opens flat.
