What Is in This Photograph?

Side-on, lit from above and behind so the highlight runs the full length of the roof and the cut-off tail. The bonnet bulge, the small windscreen, the riveted panel joints, the perspex side glass and the plain competition wheels are all visible. Twin white stripes run over the nose and roof. There is no background at all, which puts the whole emphasis on the coupe's silhouette — the reason the car exists.

Why Was the Daytona Coupe Built?

Because the open Cobra roadster could not reach the top speed of Ferrari's 250 GTO on the long straights of European circuits. A closed, aerodynamic body on the Cobra chassis solved that without changing the running gear. The prototype, CSX2287, ran ahead of Ferrari at Daytona in 1964 before a fuel fire, then won its class at Sebring. Six cars were built between 1964 and 1965.

What Did It Achieve?

The 1965 FIA International Championship for GT Manufacturers, with Shelby American finishing ahead of Ferrari — the first world sports car title won by an American team. Carroll Shelby was then moved onto the Ford GT40 programme and the Daytona project ended, which is why only six were ever made and why each one is now among the most valuable American cars in existence.
