1966 Ford GT40 Mk II P/1015 0402-5233

This is Ford GT40 chassis P/1015, the Mk II that Ken Miles and Denny Hulme drove to second place at Le Mans in 1966 — the car at the centre of the most argued-about finish in the race's history.

Why Is Chassis P/1015 Significant?

P/1015 left Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough as a Mk I in September 1965 and was flown to Shelby American in California to be built up as a team car. Fitted with the seven-litre 427 FE V8, it won the Daytona 24 Hours in February 1966 outright, carrying number 98 for Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby. Four months later the same chassis went to Le Mans as number 1.

What Happened at Le Mans in 1966?

Miles and Hulme led into the closing hour. Ford, wanting a photograph of three GT40s crossing the line together, instructed Bruce McLaren to catch Miles for a dead-heat finish. Official photographs showed the number 2 car six metres ahead at the line, and because it had started just over fourteen metres further back it had covered more ground over 24 hours. The organisers awarded the win on distance. Miles, who had already won Daytona and Sebring that year, lost Le Mans to a team instruction and a rule about grid position. He was killed testing at Riverside two months later.
