Which Car Is This?

P/1015 is one of the most travelled Mk IIs Ford built. Flown from Ford Advanced Vehicles in Slough to Shelby American in September 1965, it won the Daytona 24 Hours outright in February 1966 as number 98 with Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby, then ran Le Mans in June as number 1 with Miles and Denny Hulme, finishing second in the formation finish that cost Miles the race. It returned to Daytona in 1967 for Ronnie Bucknum and Frank Gardner and retired with transmission failure.

What Are You Looking At?

The rear three-quarter, lit from above against black. The Ford script runs along the flank. The tail treatment is pure Mk II: the cut-off rear deck, the vents cut into the bodywork to pull heat out of the seven-litre engine bay, and the roofline dropping to forty inches at the screen. The wheel arch fills the frame on the right, which is what makes the picture work as wall art rather than as documentation.

Why Does the Mk II Body Look Like This?

The Mk II existed to carry the 427 cubic inch FE V8, an engine far larger and heavier than the 289 the original GT40 was designed around. Cooling and stability at over 200 mph on the Mulsanne Straight dictated the wider track, the deeper haunches and the extraction vents visible here. Nothing on the car is decorative.
