What Is in This Photograph?

A square side view in black and white, the car placed centrally on a seamless white ground with only a soft shadow beneath it. The body is a light colour, slab-sided, with the Continental's signature crease running the full length of the flanks and wrapping the wheel openings. The roof is a thin, low pavilion with slim pillars and a wide rear quarter window, and the rear doors are hinged at the back in the way that defined these cars. Full wheel covers sit inside wide whitewall tyres, the front and rear bumper ends curve away from the body, and the Continental script is lettered on the front wing. Nothing else appears in the frame.

Why Does the 1961 Continental Matter?

Because it reset Lincoln. The design was produced by a team supervised by Elwood Engel, later Chrysler's design chief, and went into production as a sedan and a convertible (MotorTrend). It opened the fourth-generation Continental, the only vehicle Lincoln built through the 1960s, with the 1961 to 1963 cars forming the first of three distinct versions (Hagerty). Power came from the 430 cubic inch MEL V8 shared across the senior Ford range (Lincoln Continental).

Why Was It Shot on White?

Because the shape is the whole product. Strip out the setting and what remains is the unbroken body crease, the flat flanks and the thin roof, which is exactly the argument the car was making against the fins and chrome that preceded it. A pure profile on white is also the most useful reference view for a designer or a restorer, since every proportion can be measured straight off the frame.
