What Is in This Photograph?

A square colour frame in flat overcast light, the car small in the lower third and the sky given most of the picture. The Ferrari is an open barchetta in deep red, seen from the front three-quarter: a low wedge nose with a wide oval intake and a spoiler lip, faired headlamp recesses, and the prancing horse shield on the nose beside a white roundel carrying the number 27. Behind the cockpit a low wraparound screen and a rear deck with a raised fairing, and louvred vents cut into the front wing behind the wheel. The wheels are gold-painted alloys wearing tall racing tyres, the front wheel just turned into the frame. The car is on grey airfield concrete with a white edge line; two red and white marker cones stand to the left. Behind runs a hazy treeline with white buildings and parked cars, and the foreground is a wide band of rough green Florida grass, soft-focused.

Why Is a Ferrari in the Ford Archive?

Because in 1966 Ferrari was the story Ford was there to write. This car, chassis 0846, was the new works 330 P3 barchetta entered by SpA Ferrari SEFAC and driven by Mike Parkes and Bob Bondurant; it qualified second, behind Dan Gurney's Shelby-entered Mk II, and retired (Racing Sports Cars grid, 330 P3 results). Ford took the race one, two, three, Ken Miles and Lloyd Ruby winning in the X-1 roadster after Gurney's engine failed within sight of the finish (race results, 1966 12 Hours of Sebring). A Ford photographer therefore had every reason to keep this car in frame.

What Was the 330 P3?

Ferrari's answer to the Mk II, and the most serious car it had built to that point: a development of the 330 P2 with a new tubular chassis, a four-litre V12 lightened by around thirty kilograms through redesigned heads, and Lucas fuel injection replacing the six Weber carburettors, with a ZF five-speed gearbox (Supercars.net, SBR Engineering). Around 420 horsepower at 8,200 rpm in a car of roughly 1,587 lb, and only three were built (Gear Patrol).
