What Is in This Photograph?

The car sits on the narrow tarmac of the hill climb in white with orange and blue striping and FORD across the flank, doors open upwards, the enormous rear wing and roof-mounted intake silhouetted against the trees. Straw bales and flint walls line both sides. Low sun streams down the avenue and lights the dust in the air. Goodwood is the only place a Ford GT is ever photographed in this exact way, because no other venue looks like it.

What Is the Ford GT Mk II?

A track-only version of the second-generation Ford GT, revealed at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on 4 July 2019 and built with Multimatic. Freed from both road regulations and racing rulebooks, it produced around 700 horsepower from the 3.5-litre EcoBoost V6, roughly 200 more than the road car, with fixed-height racing suspension, a huge fixed rear wing and a dual-element roof intake. Just 45 were built at around a million pounds each.

Why Reveal It at Goodwood?

Because the Festival of Speed audience is the customer. The hill climb is where manufacturers debut cars aimed at collectors rather than at buyers walking into a dealership, and a car that cannot be registered and cannot be raced in a series needs exactly that audience. Ford chose 4 July for the announcement, which was not an accident either.
