What Is in This Photograph?

A full side view taken level with the car from across the road, with a shutter slow enough that the bare trees and the far verge become a single grey band and the wheels blur into discs. The car is light in colour with the Boss 302's C-stripe running along the flank and up over the rear quarter, blacked-out bonnet treatment, a front spoiler close to the road and Magnum 500 style wheels. The road surface streaks beneath it. Nothing else is in the frame.

What Is the Boss 302?

Ford's homologation special for SCCA Trans-Am. Built for 1969 and 1970, it used a high-revving 302 cubic inch V8 with canted-valve heads, and Ford quoted 290 horsepower for the street engine, a figure widely understood as conservative, while race versions were built to a reliable 450 (Heacock Classic). Production ran to 8,641 cars across the two years, of which 1,628 were 1969 models (Sports Car Market). The FIA homologated the car on 2 April 1969 (FIA Historic Database).

Why Is the Panning What Makes This Picture?

Because it puts the car in motion without a racetrack. The technique was standard practice for period Ford press photography: follow the car with the camera, expose long, and let everything that is not the car disappear. In black and white the effect is stronger still, since the only detail left in the frame is the stripe and the shape. Take the blur away and it is a parked Mustang.
