What Is in This Photograph?

A three-quarter front view from slightly below. The truck is in bright red with cream wheels and a chromed grille bar, and the driver leans out of the open window. A wooden signboard mounted on the trailer tongue reads that the job is well powered when it is Ford powered, and the yellow generator unit behind carries its own maker's plate. Trees fill the background completely, which dates the picture as much as the truck does: this is dealer or fleet promotional photography made on location rather than in a studio.

What Is an F-2?

The three-quarter-ton truck in Ford's first F-Series range, launched for 1948 and sold alongside the half-ton F-1 and the one-ton F-3. Engines were a 226 cubic inch inline six of 95 horsepower or a 239 cubic inch flathead V8 of 100 horsepower, and this is the only F-Series generation to use flathead engines throughout (Ford F-Series, first generation, BlueOvalTech).

Why Is the Generator in the Picture?

Because it is half the sales pitch. Ford sold industrial engines as well as trucks, and pairing the two in a single photograph advertised both at once. The signboard makes the argument explicit rather than leaving it to be inferred, which is how commercial photography worked in this period.
