About This Image
About This Image
The Ford Cosworth DFV V8 installed in a Tyrrell-Ford Formula One car, photographed close across the intake side with the dark blue bodywork and elf branding in frame.
What Is in This Photograph?
A tight view across the top of the engine from behind and slightly above. Four velocity stacks stand proud of the near cylinder bank, each capped with a red gauze filter, and their machined trumpets catch the light. Braided and rubber lines run across the frame in red and blue anodised fittings, the ignition leads are gathered in loops along the cam cover, and the exhaust primaries disappear into shadow on the far side. The cast FORD lettering is legible on the cam cover. To the right, the car's dark blue rear bodywork and riveted wing endplate cut into the picture, and the elf logo sits on a tank in the lower left.
What Is the Cosworth DFV?
The most successful engine in Formula One history. A 2,993 cc 90-degree V8 with a bore and stroke of 85.67 by 64.90 mm, it reliably produced over 400 bhp, reaching 408 bhp at 9,000 rpm, and it won 155 World Championship Grands Prix across sixteen seasons, powering twelve drivers' titles and ten constructors' championships (Cosworth DFV, Road & Track). The name stands for Double Four Valve. Between the banks sits a Lucas mechanical fuel injection system feeding eight slide throttles, which is what these trumpets are mounted to (Autocar).
Why Tyrrell and Ford Together?
Because the relationship was financial as well as technical. A large part of Ken Tyrrell's budget came from Ford, with another significant part from the French petroleum company elf, and the team ran the DFV as a customer engine from the moment it began building its own chassis. Tyrrell's cars turned dark blue in 1970, the year it stopped buying chassis from March and started constructing them in house (Tyrrell Racing, Collectors Car World).
Why Photograph the Engine Rather Than the Car?
Because the DFV was the era. It was sold to anyone who could pay for it, which is why a small British team could win a world championship against a factory effort, and the engine is the part of the story that was common to all of them. A close photograph of the intakes and the cast Ford name says more about 1970s Grand Prix racing than a portrait of any single chassis.
Who Is This Print For?
This Formula One print suits Grand Prix racing historians, DFV and Cosworth enthusiasts, engineers, race shops and workshop interiors. Engine photography reads almost as abstract composition at a distance and rewards close attention up close, which makes it a good fit for a room people actually sit in. Choose framed print, stretched canvas, ChromaLuxe metal or Giclée.
