What Is Happening in This Photograph?

Three Ford prototypes stand nose-in along the pit wall. The dark car in the foreground carries number 1, the white car behind it number 2, and a third pale car shows a 7. Mechanics, team managers, photographers and officials fill the lane; one man sits on the pit counter ledge with his legs over the edge. Above them the pit boxes are lettered for Ford and numbered 3 and 4, the terrace is packed with spectators, and period sponsor hoardings run the length of the wall. A fire extinguisher hangs at every box.

Which Cars Are These?

Ford entered Mk IVs and Mk IIBs in 1967. Number 1 was the Mk IV of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt, which won the race outright, covering 388 laps and 5,232.9 kilometres at an average of 218.04 kilometres per hour — a distance and average that stood as records for years. Number 2 was the Mk IV of Bruce McLaren and Mark Donohue, which finished fourth. Fifty-four cars started the race.

Why Does 1967 Matter?

It was Ford's second consecutive Le Mans victory and the only one taken by an all-American car with an all-American driver pairing: the Mk IV was designed and built in the United States, and Gurney and Foyt were both American. Gurney also sprayed champagne from the podium that year, which is where the practice began. The Mk IV was effectively legislated out of existence by a 5-litre capacity limit introduced for the following season.
