What Was the Sprint Decor Option?

The Sprint Decor Option Group dressed the Mustang in white with a broad blue bonnet and rear panel treatment, red pinstripe separation and a USA shield decal on the rear quarter panel, with matching red, white and blue interior trim.

It was offered on hardtop and SportsRoof bodies in two versions — Sprint A as an appearance package, and Sprint B adding competition suspension, Magnum 500 wheels and raised white letter tyres.

Why Did Ford Build It?

1972 was an Olympic year, and Ford used a patriotic colour scheme across several models — including a matching Pinto and Maverick Sprint — as a marketing programme tied to the American team.

It was also a response to a contracting performance market. With insurance costs and emissions regulations closing in on big engines, appearance packages became a way to sell excitement without horsepower.
