This official archive image documents the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302, a road car built for one reason: to make Ford's Trans-Am racing engine legal. SCCA rules capped capacity at 5 litres, so Ford created a 302 cubic inch V8 with large-port canted-valve heads, rated at 290 horsepower, and sold it in a homologation model — fewer than 2,000 in the first year.

Why Was the Boss 302 Built?

The SCCA's Trans-Am championship restricted engines to 5 litres and required that the specification be available in a production car. Chevrolet had the Z/28 Camaro; Ford needed an equivalent.

The answer was to fit the Mustang with a 302 cubic inch block topped by large-port cylinder heads derived from the Cleveland engine programme. Rated at 290 horsepower, the Boss 302 was widely considered to be underrated for insurance purposes.

What Made the 1969 Car Distinctive?

Larry Shinoda, recruited from General Motors, designed the Boss 302's appearance: a blacked-out bonnet and headlamp surrounds, reflective C-stripes running along the body side and up the rear quarter, a front spoiler and a matt black rear window slat option.

Underneath, the car received stiffer springs, staggered rear shock absorbers, a larger front anti-roll bar, wider wheels and front disc brakes — a genuine chassis package rather than an engine swap.
