What Engines Were Available in 1965?

The 1965 range opened with a 200 cubic inch six and moved through 289 cubic inch V8s in progressively higher states of tune, topping out with the 271 horsepower High Performance engine — the HiPo, with solid lifters, a higher compression ratio and a free-flowing exhaust.

In the fastback body, with the HiPo engine and a four-speed gearbox, the Mustang stopped being a styling exercise and became a serious car. It is the specification that made Shelby's GT350 possible.

How Did the GT350 Grow Out of This Car?

Carroll Shelby took the 2+2 fastback, fitted a modified 306 horsepower 289, revised the suspension, added a fibreglass bonnet and deleted the rear seat to qualify the car as a sports car for SCCA competition.

The GT350 gave the Mustang genuine racing credibility in its first full year on sale, and the association between the fastback shape and high performance has never been broken since.
