Why Was the Fastback Added?

The Mustang launched as a hardtop and convertible. The 2+2 fastback followed a few months later, in August 1964, to give the range a body style with an explicitly sporting rather than stylish character.

It worked on two levels. Visually the long roofline transformed the car's proportions, and practically the folding rear seat and pass-through made the Mustang usable for long journeys with luggage.

It also became the shape the Mustang returns to. Later generations have repeatedly referenced the 1965-68 fastback roofline, and it remains the most reproduced Mustang silhouette in film, model and poster form.
