1964 Shelby Cobra Sebring Race 0001-4538

This official archive photograph captures the number 10 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe in colour at Sebring in 1964, shown in profile in light blue with a Goodyear windscreen banner and a crowd watching from scaffolding towers. Designed by Peter Brock and built in a run of just six cars, the Daytona Coupe won the FIA World Sportscar Championship GT division in 1965 — the first international title for an American manufacturer.

What Does This Photograph Show?

Colour film makes this a valuable record of the Daytona Coupe's actual paintwork — a pale blue that black-and-white photography of the same cars cannot convey. The car is shown in clean profile at speed, the Kamm tail and long nose clearly readable, the number 10 in a white roundel on the door.

Behind the car the Sebring crowd stands several rows deep against a wire fence, with spectators climbing scaffolding towers and sitting on a raised platform for a better view. A Goodyear banner runs across the top of the windscreen.

Why Was the Daytona Coupe Built?

The open Cobra roadster lost too much speed to aerodynamic drag on fast circuits to beat Ferrari's GTO for the FIA GT championship. Peter Brock designed a closed coupé body for the Cobra chassis to solve that single problem.

It worked. The Daytona Coupe took the GT world championship in 1965, and Shelby American became the first American constructor to win an international championship — achieved with a total production run of six cars.
