This archival photograph shows Carroll Shelby at the wheel of a production Cobra, turned to the camera with the car's Stewart Warner instrument panel fully visible beside him.

About This Image

Carroll Shelby seated behind the wheel of a Cobra, turned toward the camera with one hand on the steering wheel and the other on the gear lever.

What Is in This Photograph?

A close view down into the cockpit from the driver's side. Shelby is in a white shirt with the sleeves rolled back, wearing a wristwatch, grinning directly at the lens. The Cobra's dashboard is fully legible beside him: the bank of Stewart Warner instruments, the toggle switches below them, the thin-rimmed four-spoke wheel and the chromed gear lever rising from the transmission tunnel. Behind the car stand men in suits, cropped at the waist, which places this indoors at a launch, a show stand or a press occasion rather than at a circuit.

What Is He Sitting In?

A production Cobra. The instrument layout, the aero screen fittings and the finished trim mark it as a road car rather than one of the stripped team cars. Shelby American assembled these in California from aluminium-bodied chassis built by AC Cars in England and Ford V8 engines shipped from Dearborn, a combination that took a very small operation from nothing to beating Ferrari in GT racing inside three seasons (AC Cobra).

Why Is Shelby Himself the Subject?

Because he was the product's best argument. A former driver who had won Le Mans in 1959, he sold the Cobra by being visibly at the centre of it, and photographs of him in the driver's seat did work that a studio shot of the car could not. Images like this one are why his name, rather than AC's or Ford's, is the one attached to the car.

Who Is This Print For?

This Carroll Shelby print suits Shelby collectors, Cobra owners and registry members, American motorsport historians, dealership showrooms and study interiors. A portrait anchors a wall in a way a car alone does not, and the readable dashboard gives Cobra owners a reason to look twice. Choose framed print, stretched canvas, ChromaLuxe metal or Giclée.

About the Artwork

Framed Print

Our framed prints feature a black, hand-stained solid wood frame with a white mat, museum-quality paper, archival inks, Acrylite glazing, and hanging hardware. The frame features a slim 0.8-inch face and projects 1.3 inches from the wall, creating a clean, contemporary shadow-box effect. Made in the USA or Europe, depending on your location.

Stretched Canvas

Our stretched canvas prints are produced on acid-free, pH-neutral, and fade-resistant canvas. Each canvas is hand-glued to solid wood stretcher bars and stretched over 1.25-inch-thick pine bars. Mounting brackets are included. Made in the USA or Europe, depending on your location.

Giclée Art Print

Our Giclée prints are produced using premium 200gsm semi-gloss paper and high-quality archival inks. Each print includes a white border around the perimeter.

For the 40 x 60 size, we use 250gsm museum-quality archival paper with an off-white, uncoated finish.

The listed size refers to the overall paper dimensions. The image is printed proportionally within the selected paper size. Made in the USA or Europe, depending on your location.

ChromaLuxe

ChromaLuxe prints use a state-of-the-art coating process that infuses the image directly onto sheets of alloy metal. The result is photography with an exceptional combination of vibrancy, clarity, and durability.

Each print arrives ready to hang. An alloy subframe on the back allows the artwork to float away from the wall for a sleek, modern appearance. This is the finest-quality print we offer. Made in the USA.
