Ford homologated the Boss 302 specifically for the Trans-Am series' 5-litre limit, and 1969 was the model's first season of competition against Roger Penske's Camaros.

What Does This Photograph Show?

Two Boss 302s are caught in close company on the descent, the leading car turned in with its dark bonnet stripe and blacked-out grille facing the camera, the second tucked directly behind on the same line.

The setting is unmistakably a period North American road course: a steep grass bank on the left, a long spectator fence along the top of the rise, a Shell sign above the paddock and rows of parked period road cars beyond the crowd.

Why Does the Boss 302 Exist?

The Boss 302 was built to win the Trans-Am championship. SCCA rules capped engine capacity at 5 litres, so Ford created a 302 cubic inch V8 with large-port cylinder heads derived from the Cleveland programme and homologated it in a road car to make it legal.

1969 was the first season. Ford ran cars through both Shelby and Bud Moore, and came up short against Mark Donohue's Penske Camaro — but the effort was rewarded with the manufacturers' championship in 1970.
