About This Image
About This Image
This official archive photograph captures the number 15 Ford Mustang Boss 302 leading the number 6 Sunoco AMC Javelin at the 1970 Trans-Am race at Lime Rock. The two cars represent the central rivalry of the 1970 season: Bud Moore Engineering's Boss 302s for Parnelli Jones and George Follmer against Roger Penske's Javelin for Mark Donohue. Ford took the manufacturers' championship that year.
What Is Happening in This Photograph?
The frame is unusually spare — two cars on an empty ribbon of track with bare trees and winter-brown scrub behind, no crowd in view. The Mustang runs ahead on the right with the number 15 on its door and a black bonnet stripe; the Javelin follows on the left with SUNOCO lettering across its flank and the number 6.
The composition makes the point better than any caption: in 1970 Trans-Am, these were the two cars that mattered.
Why Was the 1970 Trans-Am Season So Closely Fought?
For 1970 Ford cut its racing budgets sharply and consolidated its Trans-Am effort behind stock car constructor Bud Moore, who ran a pair of Boss 302s for Parnelli Jones and George Follmer. Carroll Shelby's team was dropped.
The opposition was formidable: Roger Penske had moved to AMC and put Mark Donohue in the Sunoco Javelin. The season became a straight fight between the two operations, and Ford came out ahead with the manufacturers' title.
What Was the Boss 302 Trans-Am Mustang?
Key facts about the car in this photograph:
- Built and run by Bud Moore Engineering as Ford's only factory Trans-Am team in 1970
- Based on the Boss 302, homologated for the series' 5-litre limit
- Painted in the team's distinctive school-bus yellow-orange
- Driven by Parnelli Jones in the number 15 car and George Follmer in number 16
- Won Ford the 1970 Trans-Am manufacturers' championship
