1965 Oulton Park Gold Cup, England 0001-4467

This official archive photograph captures a Ford Mustang hardtop leading a Lotus Cortina at the 1965 International Gold Cup saloon car race at Oulton Park in England, held on 18 September 1965. A Mustang started that race from pole position, and the contest between Ford's big American V8 coupé and the lightweight Lotus Cortinas of Jim Clark and Jack Sears defined British saloon racing in the mid-1960s.

What Is Happening in This Photograph?

The Mustang is caught mid-corner with its outside front wheel loaded and the body leaning hard, front bumper removed and a bare grille opening showing the running horse emblem. A Lotus Cortina follows close behind on the inside line, its own front end working under braking.

Trackside detail dates and places the image precisely: a Vitalis banner with chevron logos runs along the left of the frame, a large white advertising hoarding stands on the bank at right, and the surface shows the heavy tyre marks of a well-used race weekend.

Why Was This Rivalry So Important?

British saloon racing in 1965 pitted raw American capacity against European handling. The Mustang brought V8 torque and straight-line speed; the Lotus Cortina brought light weight, balance and, in Jim Clark and Jack Sears, two of the fastest drivers of the era.

At the Gold Cup meeting that September the Cortinas of Clark and Sears came out ahead in the wet, overcoming a Mustang that had been fastest in qualifying — a result that became part of the folklore of the British Saloon Car Championship.
