What Is Visible in This Image?

Colour film makes this a rare record of how the 1967 Ford entries actually looked. French period signage is legible in the background — RENAULT, AC, FERODO and Firestone boards — and the Mulsanne-era pit buildings run away toward the track exit.

Why Was Ford Running Two Car Types?

For 1967 Ford entered the new Mk IV as its lead weapon while keeping the developed Mk IIB as a proven fallback. Shelby-American and Holman-Moody each prepared cars, an unusual twin-team structure that spread risk across a race Ford was determined not to lose.

The strategy worked. The Mk IV won outright, and Ford took its second consecutive Le Mans victory on the way to four in a row from 1966 to 1969.

How Did the Mk IV and Mk IIB Differ?

Key distinctions between the two Ford types run at Le Mans in 1967:

• Mk IV — bonded aluminium honeycomb chassis, new long-tail body, built by Kar Kraft
• Mk IIB — developed from the 1966 Mk II with a steel semi-monocoque and revised aerodynamics
• Both used the 427 cubic inch Ford V8
• The Mk IV was the outright winner in 1967; the Mk IIB served as the experienced back-up
• Both were rendered obsolete for 1968 by a 5-litre prototype capacity limit
