This official archive photograph shows the Ford team's pit lane at Le Mans in 1967, with the Mk IV and Mk IIB cars lined up nose to tail beneath the FORD pit signs. Ford had come to win outright for a second year, and the number 1 Mk IV of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt did exactly that, covering a record 3,251 miles. Available as a framed print, stretched canvas, ChromaLuxe metal print, or Giclée art print.

About This Image

This official archive photograph captures the Ford pit lane at the 1967 24 Hours of Le Mans, with the team's Mk IV and Mk IIB cars lined up along the pit wall beneath numbered FORD signs. The number 1 Mk IV of Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt won the race outright, covering a record 3,251 miles at an average of over 135 mph — the only all-American car, team and driver pairing to win Le Mans.

What Is Happening in This Photograph?

The image looks down the Le Mans pit lane before the race, with the Ford entries arranged in a staggered line against the pit wall. Race numbers 1, 2, 57, 3 and 4 are visible on the cars, and the pit boxes overhead are marked FORD 3 and FORD 4. Crews, officials and photographers crowd the lane while spectators fill the grandstand terraces above.

Period trackside advertising is clearly legible — Polaroil, Autolite, BP, Firestone and Goodyear — along with a GOOD SHELBY banner high on the grandstand, placing the photograph firmly in the Shelby-American era of Ford's sports car programme.

Why Was the 1967 Le Mans So Significant for Ford?

1967 was the second of Ford's four consecutive Le Mans victories, and the most emphatically American of them. Dan Gurney and A.J. Foyt drove the Mk IV to a win of more than four laps, setting distance and average speed records that stood for years.

Ford fielded a two-team effort that year, with Shelby-American and Holman-Moody each running Mk IV cars, supported by the older Mk IIB. It was Gurney's victory here that produced the now-universal tradition of spraying champagne from the podium.

What Distinguished the Mk IV From the Earlier GT40?

The Mk IV was a clean-sheet car built around the J-car programme rather than a developed GT40. Its key features:

  • Bonded aluminium honeycomb monocoque — far lighter and stiffer than the GT40's steel tub
  • Long-tail, low-drag body developed for the Mulsanne straight
  • 427 cubic inch Ford V8 producing roughly 500 horsepower
  • Built in the United States by Kar Kraft to Ford specification
  • Retired at the end of 1967 when a rule change capped prototypes at 5 litres

Who Is This Print For?

This 1967 Le Mans print is ideal for Ford collectors, endurance racing enthusiasts, Le Mans historians, restoration shops, offices, garages and dealership showrooms. As vintage Ford racing wall art it documents a specific moment in the pit lane rather than a generic reproduction. Choose framed, canvas, metal or Giclée formats to match a home office, study, museum display or Ford wall decor programme.

ChromaLuxe

ChromaLuxe prints use a state-of-the-art coating process that infuses the image directly onto sheets of alloy metal. The result is photography with an exceptional combination of vibrancy, clarity, and durability.

Each print arrives ready to hang. An alloy subframe on the back allows the artwork to float away from the wall for a sleek, modern appearance. This is the finest-quality print we offer. Made in the USA.
