What Was the 427 Cobra Programme?

The 289 Cobra was light and quick but reaching the limits of what a small-block and a leaf-sprung chassis could deliver. Shelby's answer was to build a new car around Ford's 427 cubic inch big-block.

That required more than an engine swap: a new chassis with coil-spring suspension, a much wider body to cover larger wheels and tyres, and revised cooling. The result was one of the most physically intimidating road cars of the 1960s.

How Did the 289 and 427 Cobras Differ?

Principal differences between the two Cobra families:

• 289 cubic inch small-block V8 versus 427 cubic inch big-block
• Transverse leaf-spring chassis replaced by coil-spring suspension
