The 1966 Le Mans race was notable because it marked the first-ever victory for Ford at the famous endurance event, and it became a pivotal moment in the rivalry between Ford and Ferrari. Ford had been determined to beat Ferrari after a failed attempt to purchase the Italian brand, leading to their entry into the race with the goal of dominating.
Dan Gurney, an American racing legend, was driving for Ford with the Shelby American team alongside his teammate A.J. Foyt. They were in a Ford GT40 (one of the cars Ford developed specifically for Le Mans).
