1970 Ford Mustang: Specifications, Equipment & Factory Sources

Ford Knowledge Base / Mustang / 1970

Explore the 1970 Ford Mustang through original Ford publications, engineering specifications and archive photographs.

Read the edition as well as the model year. This reference covers the regular U.S. range, with Mach 1 and Grande identified where applicable. The August 1969 catalog, its January 1970 revision and the revised AMA sheets record different publication stages. A listing does not establish the equipment fitted to a particular car. Horsepower figures are Ford’s period published ratings.

Specifications and equipment

Each entry is corroborated in three distinct Ford publication families, drawn from A, Mustang catalog; B, Buyer’s Digest; C, AMA specifications; and D, Performance Buyer’s Digest. These share Ford’s corporate origin. Revisions and duplicate scans count once. References below use PDF positions, including covers; some PDFs contain two printed pages per position.

Why publication differences matter

The catalog’s Hardtop luggage figure differs from the January-revised AMA sheet. The catalog and engineering sheets also give weights on different specification bases. Fuel capacity has regional qualifications in the catalog. These figures are withheld from the common specification list pending reconciliation.

The August 1969 catalog describes a manually operated convertible top with clear vinyl backlite; the January 1970 revision describes a power-operated top with glass backlite. This publication difference is retained for review, rather than assigned an unverified vehicle changeover date. Mach 1 hood-scoop wording also needs careful separation of standard and optional equipment.

The engineering compilation distinguishes 351 engine families. Exact family/build-date rules, the complete engine/transmission matrix, six-cylinder horsepower corroboration, production totals and paint/trim codes need further research. Boss 302, Boss 429, Shelby and racing specifications require separate references.

These two Mach 1 catalog photographs help compare visible styling details. They do not establish engine, build date, paint code or original option fitment.
