1956 Ford Thunderbird — U.S. production factory reference
Published offerings describe the model range, not the equipment fitted to any individual photographed car. Keep engine/transmission combinations, publication dates and markets together. Prototype, race, Canadian and export vehicles are outside this production reference.
Specifications and equipment
Each entry cites three inspected original Ford publication families. The retail catalog, Ford AMA submission, Ford shop manual, contemporary dealer advertisement and Ford sales facts book are identified below. They share Ford corporate or promotional origin and are not independent engineering authorities. Compact catalog versions count once. Horsepower is a period advertised rating, not a conversion to modern net horsepower. PDF references count from the first scanned page; original printed pages are also identified where useful.

Publication differences and pending facts
The revised November 11 AMA general sheet separates the 292-cu.-in. conventional-drive application from the 312-cu.-in. Overdrive/Fordomatic applications. The original sales facts book’s printed page 49 preserves the same model and transmission qualifications. Its 200-hp conventional/overdrive figures for Fairlane and station-wagon models must not be substituted for the Thunderbird car’s advertised 202-hp conventional-drive figure.
The catalog lists 185.2 inches overall length and a 23:1 steering ratio, whereas the AMA general sheet lists 185.1 inches and 20.1:1. These differences remain unreconciled and are withheld as definitive specifications. Torque and engine-rpm figures, production totals, paint/VIN codes, precise changeover dates, prices, additional equipment status and competition engine claims await further corroboration. Dealer-installed or racing equipment must not be assumed to be regular production equipment.
Archive photographs
The current archive records and image files were inspected against the retail catalog’s production illustrations (A: PDF 2, 4, 7 and 9). Visible side ventilators, body trim and rear spare arrangement support these production-style selections. Exact photograph dates, paint codes and hidden powertrain details are not inferred. Racing, junior-Thunderbird and year-ambiguous production-line records were excluded.
