1955 Ford Thunderbird: U.S. production factory reference
This reference separates production offerings from development and prototype material. Listings establish published equipment availability, not the equipment installed in an individual archive photograph. Canadian, export and competition applications remain separate.
Specifications and equipment
Each entry cites three distinct visually inspected original Ford publication families. Sources A and A2 are one retail-literature family; B is Ford’s AMA technical submission; C is the Ford shop manual; D is the Ford sales facts book. These share Ford Motor Company as corporate origin. Duplicate scans and compact retail editions count once. PDF references count from the first scanned page, including covers and modern preliminaries; original printed page numbers are also given where useful.
- V-8 engine
- Ford described the production Thunderbird engine as a V-8. The shop manual identifies the Thunderbird ECJ application separately from the passenger-car and police applications.Sources: A: PDF 3; B: PDF 1–2; C: PDF 43 (41).
- Engine displacement
- The production Thunderbird ECJ V-8 is identified as 292 cubic inches. This engine specification is not assigned to either archive photograph.Sources: B: PDF 2 (printed 2); C: PDF 43 (printed 41); D: printed page 54.
- Dual exhaust
- Dual exhaust was listed for the Thunderbird; the shop manual explicitly identifies it as standard equipment.Sources: A: PDF 3,6; B: PDF 6 (6); C: PDF 57 (55).
- Conventional manual transmission
- A conventional manual transmission was offered. This entry does not infer the transmission in either photograph.Sources: A: PDF 3,6; B: PDF 1 (1); C: PDF 14 (12).
- Overdrive option
- Overdrive was offered as a transmission option.Sources: A: PDF 3,6; B: PDF 1 (1); C: PDF 14 (12).
- Fordomatic option
- Fordomatic automatic transmission was offered as an option.Sources: A: PDF 3,6; B: PDF 1 (1); C: PDF 14 (12).
- Manual/overdrive compression
- The retail folder gives an 8.1:1 compression ratio with conventional transmission or overdrive. AMA identifies the standard head at 8.1:1; the shop manual gives the same Thunderbird ECJ application.Sources: A2: PDF 4; B: PDF 2 (2); C: PDF 43 (41).
- Fordomatic compression
- The retail folder gives an 8.5:1 compression ratio with Fordomatic. AMA identifies the optional head at 8.5:1 and footnotes Fordomatic; the shop manual specifies 8.5:1 for the Fordomatic ECJ engine.Sources: A2: PDF 4; B: PDF 2 (2); C: PDF 43 (41).
- Advertised power: conventional transmission and overdrive
- Ford advertised 193 hp with conventional transmission or overdrive. These are period advertised engine ratings; they do not describe measured power at the wheels.Sources: A2: PDF 4; B: PDF 2 (printed 2); D: printed page 54.
- Advertised power: Fordomatic
- Ford advertised 198 hp with Fordomatic. The transmission qualification is retained with the rating.Sources: A2: PDF 4; B: PDF 2 (printed 2); D: printed page 54.
Publication differences and research limits
The early introductory folder, The Distinctively New Ford Thunderbird, depicts preproduction side trim and advertises 160 hp, with availability described as “this fall.” Its specifications are excluded from these production entries. See the separate 1954 prototype and preview reference.
The production folder (A2, PDF 4), the revised AMA engine sheet (B, PDF 2) and the Ford sales facts book (D, printed page 54) agree on the advertised 193-hp conventional/overdrive and 198-hp Fordomatic ratings. Displacement is corroborated separately by B, C and D. The shop-manual sample supplies the ECJ displacement and compression information; it is not cited as a third horsepower source.
Original publication dates and revisions still matter. The inspected AMA engine sheet is dated October 19, 1954, revised November 30, 1954. The early preview rating is not substituted for the production ratings, and none of these figures establishes the engine or transmission fitted in a photograph.
Further dimensions, power-assist availability, production totals, paint/VIN codes, prices, torque figures and exact changeover dates await three-family corroboration. The shop-manual sample is not a complete free shop manual.
Archive photographs
These current archive images were visually compared with the production catalog’s body, grille, roof and trim illustrations (A: PDF 1–2, 4 and 6). The catalog records identify them as 1955 Thunderbirds. Roof details and visible styling are described without inferring hidden equipment, paint codes or an exact photograph date.
