What Is in This Painting?

A plan view of the car laid diagonally across the canvas, nose to the right. The body is painted in several reds, from near-crimson in the shadow along the flanks to a hot light red across the roof and bonnet, with the windscreen, roof panel and rear glass rendered as dark blue-black masses and small flashes of reflected colour. Behind and around it the flag fills the whole field: the blue canton with roughly painted white stars at the upper left, and broad red and white stripes running to the right and bottom edges. The brushwork is left open throughout, so the flag shows through the shadow under the car.

Why Paint the Car From Above?

Because it makes the Mustang a shape rather than a portrait. Seen in plan there is no grille, no badge and no stance to admire, only a red form laid over red and white stripes, which lets the painting be about colour and geometry first. It also puts the car and the flag in the same plane instead of using the flag as a backdrop, so neither is subordinate.

What Is the Mustang's Standing?

It is Ford's longest nameplate in continuous production, on sale since 17 April 1964, when it set an industry record with more than 418,000 cars sold in its first year (Ford, Ford Mustang). The ten millionth car was built in 2018 (TopSpeed), which is the reason a painter can use it as a national emblem and expect to be understood.
