What Is in This Photograph?

A tight colour detail shot at an angle across the panel, which is painted matte black and worn at the edges. At the left a Smiths speedometer reads to 160 mph with a mechanical odometer and trip showing beneath the needle; at the right, partly behind the rim of the steering wheel, sits a large tachometer. Between them, chrome toggle and paddle switches are set in rows, each with an engraved label stuck beneath it: SPOT/L, FAN, LIGHTS, S/HEAT, WIPER, DIF PUMP, FUEL PUMP, FLASH, DIP, and IGN and START at the bottom edge. A further pair at the far left reads PANEL LIGHTS and PANEL EXTERIOR, one of them chipped down to bare metal. The lighting is low and raking, so every scratch and every screw head shows.

What Do the Switch Labels Tell You?

That this is a competition car, and a British-built one. A differential pump switch means a cooled final drive, a screen heat switch means night and weather running, and separate ignition and starter switches are standard racing practice rather than road car equipment. The hand-lettered labels, the Smiths instruments and the mixture of toggle and paddle switches place the build in a British workshop rather than on any production line.

What Is the Willment Coupe?

A Cobra coupe built in England. When Carroll Shelby would not sell John Willment a Daytona Coupe, the Ford dealer and team owner had his own coupe built on a spare Cobra chassis, and it raced as CSX2131 with a 289 developing around 385 horsepower (Autocar, Shelby American Collection). Willment's team was already running Ford-engined machinery in saloon and sports car racing at the time (Collectors Car World).
