What Is in This Photograph?

A tall frame shot in through the door opening in low light, the red bodywork visible only as a bright line along the top and bottom edges. The whole interior is matt black: painted aluminium bulkheads, a flat floor, a broad transmission tunnel and a plain black leather cushion for a seat, with a black roll bar tube crossing the top of the frame and part of a black harness at the left. The dash is a flat panel carrying a large speedometer at the left and a tachometer to the right of centre, with a cluster of smaller gauges including fuel pressure beyond the wheel. Between them sits a row of toggle switches, each with an engraved label below it reading SPOT, FAN, WIPER, DIF PUMP, FUEL PUMP, FLASH, DIP, IGN and START, along with panel and exterior light switches. The steering wheel is on the right, a three-spoke alloy rim with drilled spokes and a leather-bound outer. A short alloy gear lever with a round black knob stands in a chrome gate on the tunnel, and an inspection plate is screwed to the tunnel side.

What Is the Willment Coupe?

A one-off closed Cobra built in Britain by the John Willment Automobiles team. When Shelby declined to supply a Daytona Coupe, Willment's shop built its own coupe body on Cobra chassis CSX2131, with an engine reported at around 385 horsepower (Shelby American Collection, Collectors Car World). It sits in the Cobra story as the independent answer to a factory car (Autocar).

Why Are the Switches Labelled by Hand?

Because a racing car is operated by whoever gets in it, often at night and often tired. Engraved labels for the differential pump, the fuel pump and the headlamp flash exist so that the right switch can be found by touch and without thinking, and their presence tells you this car was run in long races rather than sprints. The single leather cushion and bare riveted panels say the same thing: every gram not needed to go the distance has been left out.
