What Is in This Photograph?

A tight colour study shot from the passenger side in low light. The wood-rimmed steering wheel dominates the frame, its three polished alloy spokes drilled and slotted, the rim studded with rivets, and at its centre a black horn button carrying the Cobra badge in red and white. Above the wheel, a pod set into the crash pad holds a large 8,000 rpm tachometer and a smaller gauge beside it. To the right, across the black dash panel, a silver Carroll Shelby signature is written large, with a running horse badge on a blue and red bar beyond it. A chrome-topped gear lever with a white-marked knob rises from a pleated rubber boot at the lower right, above dark carpet and the edge of a black vinyl seat.

Why Is the Tachometer in the Middle of the Dash?

Because Shelby put it where a driver could read it. The standard 1965 Mustang instrument layout had no big rev counter, so Shelby American added a pod on top of the crash pad with a tachometer and oil pressure gauge in it, which is one of the fastest ways to identify a 1965 car from inside. The wood wheel and the Cobra horn button belong to the same set of changes, carried out at the Venice shop on cars supplied as Hi-Performance 289 fastbacks (HowStuffWorks, Classic Motorsports).

What Does the Signature Tell You?

That the car was signed after the fact. Carroll Shelby's signature on a dash panel is not factory equipment; it is something owners collected, usually at shows, and it is now part of many cars' documented history. Photographed this close, it makes the picture as much about ownership as about engineering.
