What Is in This Photograph?

A tight colour crop of the nose, filling the frame from headlamp to headlamp. Two blue stripes run over the glass-fibre bonnet and continue down the front valance, split by the forward-facing bonnet scoop. Four chrome hood pins sit at the corners of the panel. The grille opening is a black honeycomb mesh with the running horse badge offset to the right on a small blue and red bar, and there are no fog lamps in the aperture. Where a front bumper would sit there is only a painted apron with the stripes running across it, and the oil cooler stands exposed in the opening beneath the grille, with amber indicator lamps at each outer corner. The paint holds a soft highlight along the wing crowns, and the background falls away to black.

What Was the GT350?

A Mustang fastback turned into a race-bred road car at Shelby American in Venice, California. It started as a white 2+2 with Ford's Hi-Performance 289 V8 and four-speed gearbox, to which Shelby added a high-rise manifold, uprated suspension and a roll bar, taking the 289 to 306 horsepower at 6,000 rpm (HowStuffWorks, Heacock Classic). Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue stripes was the scheme almost all of them wore, with special strut tower bracing among the chassis changes (Audrain Automobile Museum).

Why Crop So Tight?

Because the front is where the conversion shows. The scoop, the pins, the blanked fog lamp apertures and the exposed cooler are all Shelby's work rather than Ford's, and at this distance they read as engineering decisions rather than styling. The dark surround removes every reference point, so the eye stays on the stripe geometry.
