1967 Ford GT Mk IV 0401-2319

The Ford GT Mk IV in number 1 red, the car Dan Gurney and A. J. Foyt drove to victory at Le Mans in 1967 at a distance record that stood for twenty-three years.

What Made the Mk IV Different?

The Mk IV was designed and built in the United States rather than adapted from the British GT40. It used a new aluminium honeycomb chassis and an entirely new long-tailed body developed for the Mulsanne Straight, still carrying the seven-litre 427 V8. Only a handful were made, and it raced in just two events, winning both.

What Happened at Le Mans in 1967?

Gurney and Foyt led all but the first ninety minutes and won by four laps from the Ferrari 330 P4 of Ludovico Scarfiotti and Mike Parkes. They completed 388 laps and 5,232.9 kilometres at an average of 218 km/h, from a field of 54 starters. It remains one of the great all-American results in the race: American car, American team, American drivers. On the podium Gurney shook his magnum of champagne and sprayed the people around him, which is where that tradition begins.
