This archival illustration is an early pencil design sketch of the Ford Mustang GTD, drawn in side profile on grey ground with the rear wing and wheel forms blocked in.

About This Image

An early pencil design sketch of the Ford Mustang GTD, drawn in side profile on grey ground while the proportions were still being decided.

What Is in This Sketch?

A loose graphite drawing on a mid-grey field, worked at speed. The car is seen almost square on from the side: a long bonnet with louvred extractors indicated by a few strokes, a fast roofline, a heavily flared rear haunch and a rear wing sketched twice, once high and once lower, as the designer tested the height. Both wheels are drawn as detailed multi-spoke rotors while the bodywork around them is still open line, and construction lines run out beyond the car to the edges of the sheet. The front splitter and a ground line are indicated underneath.

Why Does a Sketch Like This Survive?

Because it is the record of a decision. Finished renderings show what a car became; a sketch at this stage shows the alternatives still in play, which is why the wing appears in two positions and the front end is barely resolved. Designers work through dozens of these to settle proportion before any surface is modelled, and very few leave the studio.

What Did It Become?

The Mustang GTD, a road car developed out of Ford's GT3 racing programme, with a supercharged 5.2-litre Predator V8 producing 815 horsepower and 664 lb-ft through a rear-mounted transaxle and a claimed 202 mph (Autoblog, Motor Authority). The swan-neck wing and the widened rear fenders being tested in this drawing both reached production.

Who Is This Print For?

This design sketch print suits car designers and design students, GTD owners and reservation holders, studio and office walls, and collectors who prefer process work to finished product photography. Graphite on grey reads as a drawing rather than a poster, so it sits well in a room with other artwork. Choose framed print, stretched canvas, ChromaLuxe metal or Giclée.

Framed Print

Our framed prints feature a black, hand-stained solid wood frame with a white mat, museum-quality paper, archival inks, Acrylite glazing, and hanging hardware. The frame features a slim 0.8-inch face and projects 1.3 inches from the wall, creating a clean, contemporary shadow-box effect. Made in the USA or Europe, depending on your location.

Stretched Canvas

Our stretched canvas prints are produced on acid-free, pH-neutral, and fade-resistant canvas. Each canvas is hand-glued to solid wood stretcher bars and stretched over 1.25-inch-thick pine bars. Mounting brackets are included. Made in the USA or Europe, depending on your location.

Giclée Art Print

Our Giclée prints are produced using premium 200gsm semi-gloss paper and high-quality archival inks. Each print includes a white border around the perimeter.

For the 40 x 60 size, we use 250gsm museum-quality archival paper with an off-white, uncoated finish.

The listed size refers to the overall paper dimensions. The image is printed proportionally within the selected paper size. Made in the USA or Europe, depending on your location.

ChromaLuxe

ChromaLuxe prints use a state-of-the-art coating process that infuses the image directly onto sheets of alloy metal. The result is photography with an exceptional combination of vibrancy, clarity, and durability.

Each print arrives ready to hang. An alloy subframe on the back allows the artwork to float away from the wall for a sleek, modern appearance. This is the finest-quality print we offer. Made in the USA.
