What Changed for 1969?

The 1969 Mustang grew almost four inches in length and gained a distinctly more muscular body, with quad headlamps — two in the grille and two outboard — deeply sculpted flanks and a flatter, wider tail.

The range expanded at the same time. 1969 introduced the Mach 1 performance model, the Trans-Am homologation Boss 302, the NASCAR-motivated Boss 429 and the luxury-trimmed Grande, giving Ford a Mustang for almost every buyer.

Why Is the 1969 Convertible Comparatively Rare?

By 1969 American buyer preference had shifted decisively toward closed body styles, helped by air conditioning becoming common and by concerns over proposed rollover regulations.

Convertible volumes across the industry fell as a result, and Mustang open-car production dropped to a small fraction of total output. The 1969 convertible is consequently the least common of that year's body styles and among the more sought after.
