Why Was 1967 a Pivotal Model Year?

For three years the Mustang had the pony car market largely to itself. In 1967 Chevrolet launched the Camaro and Pontiac the Firebird, both designed with the Mustang explicitly in view and both available with larger engines.

Ford's answer was the 1967 restyle: more presence, more interior space, and for the first time room for a big-block. It marked the point at which the Mustang shifted from a stylish compact toward an outright performance car.

What Does the Fastback Roofline Contribute?

The 1965-66 fastback roofline ended above the rear deck. For 1967 it was redrawn to run in one continuous line from the windscreen to the tail panel, with deep functional-looking scoops in the rear quarters.

The change made the car look longer and lower than it was, and gave designers the silhouette that later Mustang generations would keep returning to as shorthand for the original.
