What Is Visible in This Photograph?

The Mustang is caught in a right-hand corner with the body rolled onto its outside tyres and a hint of lift at the inside front wheel. It runs in pale yellow with a black competition bonnet, no front bumper, a Gulf disc on the rear quarter and driver names lettered in small type on the door above GULF No-nox.

Goodyear and Champion decals sit on the front wing, the roll cage is visible through the side glass, and the spectators lining the fence are blurred by the panning exposure — the photographer tracking the car rather than freezing it.

What Was the Trans-Am Series?

The SCCA's Trans-American Sedan Championship was created in 1966 by SCCA president John Bishop and opened at Sebring on 25 March that year. It was contested by production-based sedans and coupés, which in practice meant Mustangs, Camaros, Javelins, Barracudas and imported saloons.

The series became the most important showcase for American manufacturers through the late 1960s, and the Mustang's early dominance is a large part of why the Boss 302 exists at all.
