1964 Sebring Shelby Cobra Coupe 0001-4493

This official archive photograph captures the number 10 Shelby Cobra Daytona Coupe racing at Sebring in 1964, shown in three-quarter view with a Goodyear windscreen banner and a dense crowd behind the fence. Designed by Peter Brock and built in a run of just six cars, the Daytona Coupe went on to win the FIA World Sportscar Championship GT division in 1965.

What Does This Photograph Show?

The Coupe is caught turning through a corner marked out by white tyre walls, body visibly travel-stained, with the number 10 in a white roundel on the door and a Goodyear banner across the top of the windscreen.

Behind the wire fence the crowd is packed several rows deep, with spectators watching from a scaffolding platform and a service vehicle parked among them — the informal trackside arrangements typical of Sebring in the mid-1960s.

Why Was the Daytona Coupe Built?

The open Cobra roadster was fast but aerodynamically limited, losing decisive speed to Ferrari's GTO on long European straights. Peter Brock designed a closed coupé body on the Cobra chassis to fix exactly that problem.

The result worked. The Daytona Coupe took the FIA GT world championship in 1965, making Shelby American the first American constructor to win an international championship title — and did it with a total production run of six cars.
