Why Was 1965 Shelby's Defining Season?

The Daytona Coupe was built for one purpose: to beat Ferrari for the FIA GT championship, which the open Cobra roadster could not do on fast European circuits. Peter Brock's closed coupé body gave the Cobra chassis the top speed it needed.

Shelby's team took the GT title in 1965, the first international championship won by an American manufacturer. Only six Daytona Coupes were built, which is why period photographs of them in competition are so sought after.
