What Is in This Photograph?

A wide view from slightly above, the trucks arranged in receding diagonal rows that run off the left edge of the frame. All are white, with the F-1's five-bar grille and headlamps set into the wings, and each carries a boxed vending body with a route sign and price cards along the side. A driver in a white uniform and peaked cap stands beside every truck in the front ranks, spaced with military regularity. The apron is bare concrete, the ground beyond is winter grass and mud, and a line of leafless trees and low buildings sits under a flat grey sky.

What Is a Good Humor Fleet Photograph?

A record of one of the largest direct-selling vehicle operations in America. Harry Burt began by buying a dozen Ford vending trucks and fitting them with primitive freezers, and Good Humor's vehicles became known as sales cars (OT Good Humor, MotorTrend). By the 1950s the company was operating up to 2,000 sales cars, and by 1956 the fleet had reached that number (Good Humor). Photographs like this were taken as the season's fleet was handed over.

What Was the 1950 F-1?

Ford's half-ton truck from the first F-Series generation, the only generation offered exclusively with flathead engines: a 226 cubic inch six rated at 95 horsepower or a 239 cubic inch flathead V8 at 100 (Ford F-Series, first generation, Blue Oval Tech). Its short wheelbase and simple ladder frame made it an obvious base for a vending body.
