This official archive image documents the 1969 Ford Mustang Boss 302, the homologation model created so that Ford's 5-litre Trans-Am engine could race. Larry Shinoda's appearance package — blacked-out bonnet, reflective C-stripes, front spoiler and optional rear window slats — made it the most visually distinctive Mustang Ford had yet built.

Who Was Larry Shinoda?

Larry Shinoda came to Ford from General Motors, where he had worked on the Corvette Sting Ray. Recruited by Bunkie Knudsen, he was given the Boss 302 and Boss 429 programmes and gave both cars their identity.

The name itself is attributed to Shinoda, who used 'Boss' as an internal reference to Knudsen and the project. The reflective side stripes, matte black treatments and functional-looking spoilers set the visual language for Ford performance cars for the next several years.

What Was the Engine?

The Boss 302 V8 combined a 302 cubic inch block with large-port canted-valve cylinder heads developed for the Cleveland engine family, a solid-lifter camshaft, a high-rise aluminium inlet manifold and a 780 cfm four-barrel carburettor.

The official 290 horsepower figure was conservative. The engine's real strength was its ability to rev, which is exactly what a road racing series demanded and what distinguished it from Ford's big-block drag racing engines.
