1958 Ford Thunderbird — U.S. production factory reference

Listings describe published offerings, not the equipment fitted to an individual archive vehicle. Keep market, edition and engine/transmission restrictions attached. Prototype, competition and export applications remain separate.

Specifications and equipment

Each entry cites three inspected original Ford publication families, with their scope qualifications attached. Thunderbird’s own retail folder, shop manual and advertising establish model-specific equipment. The full-size Ford powertrain booklet and service specifications are limited cross-checks for matching engine properties. All share Ford corporate origin. Duplicate scans and retail revisions count once. Sample PDF and full-reader positions are distinguished; printed page labels appear in parentheses.

V-8 engine
The engine described here is the Thunderbird Special V-8.Sources (scan positions): A: 3; B: 6 (printed 1-2); C: 5 (printed 5).
352 engine displacement
The Thunderbird Special engine was listed at 352 cubic inches.Sources (scan positions): A: 3; B: 6 (printed 1-2); C: 5, 13 (printed 5, 13), Interceptor 352 Special.

Advertised engine power
Ford advertised the Thunderbird 352 Special V-8 at 300 hp. This is a period promotional rating; engine speed and a modern net equivalent are not supplied here.Sources (scan positions): A: 3; C: 5 (printed 5); D: 7.
Bore and stroke
The Thunderbird 352 Special V-8 was listed with a 4.00-inch bore and a 3.50-inch stroke.Sources (scan positions): A: 3; B: 6 (printed 1-2); E: 6 (printed 5), 352 column; engine-property cross-check only.
Four-barrel carburetor

Publication differences and research limits

The January 1958 folder and later convertible advertisements represent different stages of the model year. Later advertising alone does not establish which additional engines reached production. Additional engine availability, exact introduction dates, chassis dimensions, transmission combinations, disputed option status, production totals, VIN and paint codes, and prices remain pending three-family verification. Full-size Ford equipment and transmission applications are not transferred into this Thunderbird reference.

The full-size Ford service booklet explicitly excludes Thunderbird in its foreword (E: PDF 3). It is used only for the matching 352-engine properties identified above. Its 352 valve-lash table differs from the Thunderbird manual’s hydraulic-lifter description; the manuals must not be treated as interchangeable. Compare B: PDF 9 (printed 1-5) with E: PDF 8 (printed 7). No valve-gear figure from E is admitted here.

Front-seat adjustment has an edition-specific status difference: the January folder lists manual driver-seat adjustment among standard equipment and manual front-passenger adjustment among extras, while a separate advertisement treats individual front-seat adjustment as standard. Compare A: PDF 3 and D: PDF 3. The full manual shows a manual seat track (full scan 318, printed 11-5), but does not resolve this edition difference; no blanket standard-equipment claim for passenger-seat adjustment is admitted.

Period advertised horsepower is kept separate from modern net ratings. Available equipment does not identify what is fitted to an archive vehicle. A registration plate year does not establish the model year, capture date or production status of a photographed car.

Archive photographs

The archive photographs were visually compared with the retail folder’s hardtop illustrations (A: PDF 2 and 4) and original Ford press photographs (PDF 1–4). Quad headlamps, the roof, grille, side ornament and rear lamps support the 1958 production-style identification. The front view carries a 1957 Michigan plate, which does not establish an exact photograph date or production status. These illustrations do not establish that a particular car is a retail production unit. Engines, trim colors and hidden equipment are not inferred. Both active product records and current image URLs were rechecked for this review.
