On June 19, 1966, the 1966 24 Hours of Le Mans marked a pivotal triumph for Ford Motor Company and the legendary Carroll Shelby, culminating in a historic 1-2-3 sweep that ended Ferrari's six-year dominance of the iconic endurance race. In front of 350,000 spectators the Shelby and Holman & Moody drivers, crews and team expertise turned prior failures into overwhelming success, as Ford GT Mk IIs claimed the top spots (Bruce McLaren/Chris Amon first, Ken Miles/Denny Hulme second, Ronnie Bucknum/Dick Hutcherson third), delivering the first overall Le Mans victory for an American manufacturer since 1921 and securing the International Championship for GT Manufacturers.
